HANA to Set Up Unified Standards for HDTV
December 21, 2005
On December 14, HANA (High Definition Audio Video Network Alliance), a coalition consisting of Samsung, JVC, US GE, NBC Universal, Charter Communications, Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America, and Sun Microsystems, was formed to simplify the process of using HDTV services on handheld devices. Currently in talks with the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association), CableLabs, and the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America), HANA intends to establish unified standards by leveraging existing technologies, so that people can deliver multimedia content to handheld devices through one cable. HANA expects that, through standardized specifications, people can view, pause, and record up to five HD channels with one STB (Set-Top Box). HANA-enabled content will be protected by the copyright detection technology, but users can still deliver the content on various devices.

According to HANA's three-stage roadmap, enhanced HDTVs, NIUs (Network Interface Unit), AV HDDs, and PVRs (Personal Video Recorder) will be available at the January 2007 International CES, while OCAP (Open Cable Application Platform)/ACAP (Advanced Common Application Platform) NICs, high-definition game consoles, next-generation DVDs, home theaters, and portable devices will be launched in the first half of 2007.
